How to Care For Your Alpaca Products
Clean Marketing on Mar 20th 2023
Alpaca wool is prized for its warmth, softness, and durability, not to mention its hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking and sustainable qualities. But to keep your alpaca products in top condition, it's important to take proper care of them. Here are some tips for taking care of your alpaca products:
1. Dry Clean Your Alpaca Products
If possible, we highly recommend dry cleaning your alpaca products, especially for items such as sweaters, cardigans, throws, ruanas and the like. The higher the alpaca fiber content in the product, the higher our recommendation to dry clean it is.
2. Hand Wash Your Alpaca Products
If it's not possible to dry clean, the next best method is to hand wash your alpaca products. This works especially great for smaller items such as hats, socks and gloves. Fill a basin or sink with cool water and a mild detergent specifically designed for wool (with the caveat that we would recommend against using Woolite as it is designed to break down similar proteins that makeup alpaca fiber).
Avoid using hot water or bleach, which can cause the fibers to shrink or become damaged. Gently swish your alpaca product in the soapy water, being careful not to twist or wring it. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until all the soap has been removed.
3. Some Products Can Be Washed In A Washing Machine (However, Avoid This As Much As Possible)
If absolutely necessary, some alpaca products, especially those with a blend, such as socks or some hats, can be washed in a washing machine, however, pay attention to the alpaca fiber content of your product, and always follow manufacturers directions and recommendations. If you must use a washing machine, we'd recommend placing the product in a mesh garment bag and washing using gentle cycle in cold water, preferably using a detergent such as Tide Cold Clean wash. One washed, avoid using a dryer to dry. We recommend laying flat to dry.
We can't express enough how important it is to make sure to read the manufacturers recommendation.
4. Dry Your Alpaca Products Flat
After washing, gently press your alpaca product to remove excess water. Don't wring or twist it, as this can damage the fibers. Lay your alpaca product flat on a clean towel and reshape it as needed. Avoid hanging to dry, as the weight of the water can cause it to stretch out of shape.
5. Store Your Alpaca Products Carefully
When you're not wearing your alpaca products, store them carefully. Alpaca wool is sensitive to moths and other pests, so it's a good idea to store your products in an airtight container or bag. You can also use natural moth repellents like cedar balls or lavender sachets. Avoid storing your alpaca products in direct sunlight, as this can cause the colors to fade. Instead, store them in a cool, dry place, like a drawer or closet.
6. Groom Your Alpaca Products Regularly
Alpaca wool can attract dust and dirt, so it's important to groom your products regularly. Use a soft-bristled brush or a lint roller to remove any debris. Don't use a wire brush or a razor, as this can damage the fibers.
7. Repair Any Damage Promptly
If your alpaca product becomes damaged, repair it promptly to prevent further damage. Small holes or snags can be repaired with a needle and thread. For larger tears or damage, take your product to a professional seamstress or tailor.
8. Avoid Common Mistakes
To keep your alpaca products in top condition, it's important to avoid common mistakes that can damage the fibers. Never use bleach, fabric softener, or other harsh chemicals on your alpaca products. These can cause the fibers to become brittle and damaged. Avoid exposing your alpaca products to extreme heat or sunlight, as this can cause them to fade or become damaged. When storing your alpaca products, don't compress or fold them in a way that could damage the fibers.
9. Treat Stains Carefully
If your alpaca product gets stained, don't panic. Treat the stain carefully with a mild detergent and cool water. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can cause it to spread. Instead, gently blot the stain with a clean towel until it has been removed. If the stain persists, take your alpaca product to a professional cleaner. Be sure to let the cleaner know that your product is made from alpaca wool.
In conclusion, alpaca products are luxurious and durable, but they require proper care to stay that way. Hand wash your products, dry them flat, store them carefully, groom them regularly, repair any damage promptly, avoid common mistakes, and treat stains carefully. With proper care, your alpaca products will last for many years and provide you with warmth and comfort.
